What is the origin of this peculiar name – Las Grutas de Tolantongo?

We start from the assumption that, according to Enrique Rivas Paniagua, the name comes from tonalli, which means “heat of the sun” or “where you feel warmth” in Nahuatl. It is then when Enrique Rivas Paniagua, in the book ‘Lo que el viento nos dejó: hojas de terruño hidalguense”, explained that the neighboring towns referred to these caves with the name of Tonaltongo. Even so, when they were discovered, the name was misspelled but it was the one that was officially adopted: Tolantongo.

What is the story behind Grutas de Tolantongo?

San Cristobal belongs to the municipality of Cardonal and was born when the hacienda “La Florida” was expropriated. Tourism began there in the 1960s. Today tourism is the main activity in this area, since it has Las Grutas de Tolantongo Water Park and the La Gloria Water Park.

When it opened it began to offer services such as the rental of horses, donkeys and mules to go down the ravine. As time went by, food and camping sites were added. From the beginning a price was established to enter the Grotto. This money was used to adapt the facilities. Dressing rooms, showers, walkways and stairs were built.

In 1995, the Secretary of Tourism (SECTUR) and the Secretary of the Environment, Natural Resources and Fisheries (SEMARNAP) proposed the integration of Tolantongo into a Natural Protected Area (NPA), a measure that was rejected.

Tourism had been maintained until 2002, but it has increased due to the promotion of the place through its website. Today Las Grutas de Tolantongo is a tourist complex with hot springs, in addition to a set of three pools that run along the canyon walls.

Inside Tolantongo caves, you can observe the stalactites and stalagmites that, over the years, have been formed by the filtration of water between the rocks and their minerals.

The water from Tolantongo cave in turn supplies the pools and the thermal water river of the park, in a network of internal aquatic connections that connect the natural waters throughout the park.

To enter Las Grutas de Tolantongo as a couple, hold on to your partner, as the area can be very slippery due to the constant flow of water between the stones of the waterfall that serves as a backdrop to the entrance.

Hold the children’s hands and do not neglect them, the depth of the water in the well can be dangerous for the little ones. Although both the entrance and the interior have handrails to hold on to, it is best to be cautious.

Swimming in Tolantongo River

It is a warm water river that crosses the length of the park.

Adapted between rocks to form some warm pools, this wonderful and natural river starts in a kind of rapids and culminates in segments that offer quiet spaces for swimming and enjoyment.

It is a river of turquoise waters, one of the main attractions around Grutas de Tolantongo Hidalgo.

Whether swimming in it or simply sitting on its shore, the stay in its waters provides true relaxation. The best thing is that, due to its shallow depth, children can play and swim peacefully.

The most incredible thing about this river is that it is totally natural, its waters come from the mountain and the warmth of the same is maintained throughout its length. It is truly a wonder of nature hidden among the mountains of Tolantongo.

Enjoy the breathtaking views of Grutas de Tolantongo

Recreate your mind and engrave in your memory the memory of the most beautiful landscapes, stopping to appreciate the views that the nature of Hidalgo and las Grutas de Tolantongo give you.

Recommendations for your visit to Las Grutas de Tolantongo

Travel during the week

Tolantongo has become a very popular tourist area, so on weekends it is crowded with people. For a quiet enjoyment of your stay, we recommend visiting during the week.

Wear the right clothes

To bathe in Tolantongo hot springs, bathing suits are required, so don’t leave them behind; for the walk, wear sportswear and, for your stay and to go to the restaurants, don’t forget your jacket, as it can get cold.

Wear water shoes

The entire area of Tolantongo caves – whether it is the Steam Tunnel, La Gruta de Tolantongo, the pools or the river – can be dangerously slippery due to the constant rubbing of the water against the rocks and the ground, therefore the use of aquatic shoes is recommended.

Leave your accessories and jewelry behind

The water current is strong in Tolantongo, so your accessories such as watches, earrings or bracelets can get loose in the water and end up lost, so it is best to leave them at home.

Carry cash

There are no points of sale in the entire complex formed by “Las Grutas de Tolantongo” Tourist Center, so you cannot use your debit or credit cards: everything, absolutely everything, must be paid in cash.

Bring water diapers

If you are traveling with babies, you must include in your luggage special diapers for water, since in Tolantongo they will not allow you to take them into the water if you do not have the proper diapers.

Bring cameras and waterproof equipment

At Tolantongo all the water attractions involve water falling on you at some point. So, in order to be able to take pictures underwater, it is best to bring submersible photographic equipment; otherwise, you may lose the opportunity to capture wonderful images.

Remember to bring flashlights for the water, as there are dark areas between the tunnel and the grotto in which, without a powerful flashlight, you will not be able to get good pictures.

Remember that there are no reservations

Once again we remind you that the hotels at the Grutas de Tolantongo do not have reservations, so it is best to arrive very early on Saturday or, better yet, visit on weekdays to reduce the risk of not finding an available room.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab your favorite backpack with lots of pockets and explore the best of Tolantongo!
